What are the causes of tinnitus? How should it be treated?

Tinnitus is a disorder of the sense of hearing, with a variety of high and low sounds and tones, and is one of the common symptoms of ear disease. Tinnitus associated with ear diseases is often accompanied by deafness and vertigo. According to the pitch of tinnitus, it is often divided into two types: low-pitch tinnitus and high-pitch tinnitus. Low-pitched booming and whining sounds are mostly due to conduction system pathology. For example, cerumen embolism in the external ear canal, foreign body blockage in the external ear canal, acute catarrhal otitis media, chronic catarrhal otitis media, acute suppurative otitis media, and chronic suppurative otitis media. High-pitched tinnitus is the sound of cicadas, steam whistles, boiling water, mostly caused by lesions of the sensorineural system, such as Meniere’s disease, drug-induced deafness, noise trauma, infectious deafness, and age-related deafness. Many people are troubled by tinnitus to varying degrees, manifesting as mental tension and insomnia, which seriously interferes with normal life. How does tinnitus form? There are many reasons for the formation of tinnitus, except for the lesions of the auditory system. Some tinnitus has nothing to do with the auditory system, but is related to emotions (hypothalamus), memory (frontal lobe of the brain) and autonomic response, so the lesions involved in tinnitus are very wide. In addition, some people have tinnitus whenever they are menstruating, fatigued, or drinking alcohol, and tinnitus can also occur during menopause and neurosis. Tinnitus can also occur in systemic diseases of various organs of the body, such as hypertension, hypotension, leukemia, anemia, kidney disease, and arteriosclerosis. What should I do if I have tinnitus? There are many causes and triggers for tinnitus, so if you have tinnitus for a long time, you should first go to an otolaryngologist to find out the cause. The doctor will take a careful medical history and conduct a comprehensive examination of the otorhinolaryngology scope, including audiological examination and vestibular function examination. If internal diseases or cranio-cerebral diseases are suspected, prompt consultation should be made to internal medicine or neurology. In conclusion, tinnitus should not be delayed and should be seen by a doctor in a timely manner to detect hidden problems early, confirm the diagnosis early and treat early. How to prevent tinnitus? In terms of prevention and treatment, it is necessary to maintain emotional stability and reduce the burden of thought, avoid overwork, abstain from sexual intercourse, avoid smoking and alcohol, strengthen exercise and enhance physical fitness. In terms of treatment, since the causes are complex, we should actively treat the systemic diseases that cause tinnitus according to different causes, such as stopping medication immediately for pharmacotoxic tinnitus and getting out of the noise environment for noisy tinnitus.
