How high blood pressure in pregnancy affects the fetus

High blood pressure in pregnancy may lead to fetal malformation, slow fetal growth, fetal hypoxia, intrauterine fetal death or placental abruption.
If a pregnant woman’s blood pressure is too high during pregnancy, it may lead to vasoconstriction of the blood vessels in the placenta, and therefore may lead to insufficient blood supply to the fetus, symptoms of hypoxia, and in severe cases, may even lead to miscarriage or preterm labor, fetal death in utero. If a pregnant woman’s blood pressure is elevated for a long period of time or is particularly high, then there is a greater chance of risks such as fetal malformation, slow fetal growth or placental abruption.
Therefore, if a pregnant woman’s blood pressure is high, it can usually be controlled by adjusting her lifestyle, diet, and using medication under a doctor’s supervision to reduce the chances of the above risks.
