How to choose the timing of polydactyly surgery?

In polydactyly, the multiple fingers mostly occur on the radial side of the thumb and the ulnar side of the little finger, and less commonly on the sides of the index, middle, and ring fingers. The multiple fingers are often attached to the phalanges or metacarpals of normal fingers. They may be attached to the side of the metacarpophalangeal joint or interphalangeal joint. The shape and structure of the multiple fingers vary greatly. Some are shaped like spherical meatus and are only connected to the normal fingers by a narrow thread-like cuticle, while others have the shape of normal fingers with nails, bony joints, tendons and neurovascular bundles. Some of them have normal finger shape, nail, bone and joint, tendon and neurovascular bundle. Timing of surgery: 1. If the multifidus is connected to the normal finger by a narrow linear dermatome, surgical excision can be performed at any time after birth. If there are bones and joints, tendons, and neurovascular bundles connected to the normal finger, the surgery can be postponed until school age if more complicated surgeries such as joint capsule and tendons are needed. 3.If there is a need for bone and joint surgery, the surgery can be performed after the development of bone scale has stopped or after adulthood.
