Can you carry warts for life if you have them?

Warts are usually not carried for life.
Warts are mainly caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6 and 11 infection of the genitourinary tract skin mucosa, belonging to the sexually transmitted diseases. The HPV type 6 and 11 are low-risk types of HPV, which are generally rare and cause cancerous changes.
Low-risk infections are usually cleared by the immune system after about three months to a year. However, for other high-risk types of infection, the disease will not recur and the virus will not be carried for life as long as the infection site is completely cleared of the virus and there is no re-exposure to the virus.
Treatment for warts includes medication, physical therapy (including freezing, electrocautery, laser, etc.), surgery, etc. Sexual intercourse should be avoided during treatment to prevent cross-infection.
