What is temporal lobe epilepsy?

Temporal lobe epilepsies (temporal lobe epilepsies): are types of epilepsy in which seizures originate in the temporal lobe. It is one of the most common epilepsy syndromes and is seen mainly in adults and adolescents, accounting for about 50% or more of cases in adults. Some patients have a history of febrile convulsions. It can be divided into medial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) and lateral temporal lobe epilepsy (LTLE), with the majority of this type of epilepsy being the former. A variety of damaging factors can contribute to the onset of epilepsy, with hippocampal sclerosis being the most common pathological change. Seizure types include simple partial seizures characterized by autonomic symptoms, specific sensory symptoms, and psychiatric symptoms, and complex partial seizures with multiple autonomic symptoms. EEG shows epileptiform discharges in the temporal region.
