How to treat recurrent respiratory tract infections

  Shen Moumou, female, 9 years old History: The child started to have recurrent respiratory infections since she was 5 years old and has suffered from pneumonia for many times. At the time of the initial consultation, the child was pale, shortness of breath, frequent coughing, body temperature of 38.2℃ (R), loss of appetite, pulse count, red pharynx (+), first degree enlargement of tonsils, small to medium-sized wet rales and no croup in both lungs. The tongue is red, the coating is yellow and greasy, and the pulse is thin and weak. The chest radiograph showed bronchopneumonia, with the middle and lower lung fields on both sides being the most prominent.  Diagnosis: recurrent respiratory tract infection and mild anemia. (taken twice daily with water) advised to eat a light diet and avoid spicy and stimulating food.  Second Diagnosis: Fever subsided, cough less and gas calmed, two lung rales reduced, spirit improved. The tongue is red with thin yellow coating. Change the formula of Lung Clearing with addition and subtraction: Sangbai Pi 6 Bitter Almond 6, followed by Licorice 3, Fishy Herb 15, followed by Chuanbei Mum 6, Xiang Bei 10, Open Jin Lock 15, Scape Drabble 10, Decoction, Stir-fried Saxifrage 10, Flos Daturae 6, White Poria 10, Rhizoma Atractylodes 10 × 7 doses (decoction in water, taken twice daily). The tongue is light red with thin white coating. The chest X-ray showed clear lung field, no pathological shadow. The symptoms did not occur at the time of follow-up examination.  The child’s respiratory symptoms and pulmonary signs were obvious at the first consultation, so the child was firstly given Mao Xing Shi Gan Tang with addition and subtraction to promote the lung and stop coughing. Throughout the history of the disease, it reflects the sequential application of the three methods of “propagation, clearing and tonifying”, and achieved good clinical efficacy.
