Sigmoid torsion can be treated either by manual repositioning or by open surgery. Sigmoid torsion can be caused by inflammatory adhesions, excessive sigmoid colon length or dry stools. Symptoms of intestinal obstruction can occur after intestinal torsion, and abdominal pain is often present. If the symptoms are not relieved, the abdominal pain and distension will progressively worsen, and in severe cases, intestinal perforation, necrosis and peritonitis may occur. The diagnosis can be assisted by sigmoidoscopy or X-ray plain film examination; barium enema is also available. The treatment can be conservative, with temporary fasting, water fasting, gastrointestinal decompression and intravenous rehydration to maintain electrolyte balance. If the symptoms worsen progressively, surgical treatment can be performed if necessary.
