Herbal remedies for irregular menstruation and low menstrual flow



The treatment of menstrual disorders with low menstrual flow is based on evidence-based treatment. The Chinese herbal medicines for treating different types of menstrual disorders with low menstrual flow include Qui Kidney Pill, Nourishing Blood Soup, Taohong Four Substances Soup, and Cangzhu Guiding Phlegm Pill.

1. The composition of Qui Kidney Pill is Cuscuta chinensis, Cortex Eucommiae, Fructus Lycii, Cornus officinalis, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, Radix et Rhizoma Dioscoreae, Radix et Rhizoma Dioscoreae, Poria. It can be used to treat menstrual bleeding with kidney deficiency, symptoms include scanty or gradual menstrual flow, dark color, thin texture; lumbar and knee pain and tenderness (a feeling of soreness and weakness of the waist and knees), dizziness, tinnitus, heel pain, or abdominal coldness or nocturnal polyuria.

2. The drug composition of Nourishing Blood Tang is ginseng, Chinese yam, astragalus, poria, chuanxiong, angelica, white peony, and ripened radix et rhizoma. It can be used to treat menstrual bleeding with low blood circulation, symptoms include low volume of menstrual blood or dripping blood, pale color and thinness; or accompanied by vague pain in the abdomen, dizziness, palpitation (rapid heartbeat, often accompanied by panic), palpitations (rapid heartbeat, panic), dazed and yellowish (yellowish and lusterless), and so on.

3. The ingredients of Tao Hong Si Wu Tang are peach kernel, safflower, angelica, radix rehmanniae, radix et rhizoma, radix et alba, rhizoma peony and Rhizoma ligustici Chuanxiong. It can be used to treat menorrhagia with blood stasis, which is characterized by scanty menstrual flow, dark purple color and blood clots; abdominal distension and pain, which is relieved after the blood clots are discharged.

It can be used for the treatment of phlegm-dampness syndrome of menorrhagia, which is characterized by scanty menstrual flow, pale red color, sticky and greasy texture like phlegm; obesity, chest tightness and vomiting, or excessive sticky and greasy discharge.

The adverse effects and contraindications of the above herbs are not clear, and they must be used under medical supervision.
