There are often multiple conditions associated with red eyes and heavy eye discharge. If the eyes are more severely congested, there is also yellow, pus-like eye discharge. Especially if it is pasted on the eyelids in the early morning and hinders the opening of the eyes, it is usually bacterial conjunctivitis caused by a bacterial infection. Anti-inflammatory treatment with levofloxacin drops or Tobex eye drops, together with Tobex eye ointment as well as Gatifloxacin eye ointment, is needed and usually results in significant improvement in 5-7 days. If there is a lot of white drops and the eyes are accompanied by tearing and foreign body sensation, a viral infection is likely. Antiviral treatment can be given with ganciclovir gel or acyclovir eye drops. Viral infections can have a long course and usually take 1-2 months to fully recover.
