Proper use of ginseng does not normally cause elevated blood pressure, but long-term use of ginseng or ginseng preparations may have the adverse effect of elevated blood pressure.
Ginseng has the effects of tonifying the vital energy (replenishing the root qi of the body), tonifying the spleen and the lungs (tonifying the spleen and lungs), generating fluids, and tranquilizing the spirit and promoting intelligence (settling the mind and promoting intellectual development). It is used for treating the sinking of the middle qi (deficiency of qi in the spleen and stomach, with manifestations such as falling of the internal organs), shortness of qi, insomnia and forgetfulness, palpitations (rapid heartbeat, often accompanied by panic), dysphoria (violent heartbeat, panic and restlessness), and so on.
Prolonged use of ginseng or ginseng preparations may cause adverse reactions such as diarrhea, rash, insomnia, nervousness, elevated blood pressure, depression, hypersexuality (or hypogonadism), headache and palpitation. Ginseng should not be used in conjunction with quinine, pentosidine and saponaria.
Prompt medical attention is recommended in case of discomfort. If medication is needed, it should be identified by a doctor and standardized treatment should be followed.
