A specific type of asthma with chronic cough as the main or only clinical manifestation is called cough variant asthma, which has a complex etiology, mainly related to allergies, both environmental factors such as pollen and dust mites, and food factors such as milk, eggs and seafood. Each child’s allergens are different and blood tests are needed to identify the specific allergens so that exposure can be targeted and avoided. Since this type of cough usually comes on at night or early in the morning with a dry paroxysmal cough or a small amount of sputum, parents mistakenly think that the cough is caused by a cold or flu, or do not pay much attention to it, or simply give the child antibiotics and cough suppressants. This cough often remains untreated for a long time, often lasting more than 4 weeks. Western medicine treats this cough mainly with anti-allergy treatment, but the long medication cycle and the tendency for symptoms to recur after stopping the medication make it a headache for parents. Chinese medicine believes that this type of cough is mainly related to “wind” and “phlegm”. In the acute stage, Chinese medicine is used to dispel wind and phlegm, clear the lungs, resolve phlegm and stop coughing, and effectively relieve the symptoms; in the remission stage, the lungs are tonified and the spleen is strengthened to remove the “persistent root”. During the remission period, we use the method of tonifying the lung and spleen to remove the “persistent roots” and increase the child’s threshold of reaction to allergens, so as to reduce the incidence. Parents should be reminded that this type of cough does not improve significantly with the age of the child, so they need to take their child to the doctor early to reduce the child’s suffering.
