Does deafness and tinnitus necessarily mean kidney deficiency?

In the clinic, patients often ask me, “Is tinnitus and deafness kidney deficiency? “Is it okay to take Six Flavored Pills?” “The doctor said I have kidney deficiency, let’s do an ultrasound and check the kidney function!” ……, these strange and bizarre questions are very normal in the eyes of patients, but as a professional I really cried and laughed when I heard it. To be honest, I can’t explain it clearly in a sentence and a half: if I talk about it deeply, the patient won’t understand; if I talk about it shallowly, the patient will be half-trusted. The cause of tinnitus and deafness is very complicated, and the severity of the condition is related to the individual’s psychological state. Chinese medicine believes that the kidneys open the ears, so many people believe that tinnitus and deafness may be related to kidney deficiency. However, if we think that all tinnitus and deafness are caused by kidney deficiency, we will go into a misunderstanding, because the ear has extensive connections with other internal organs and meridians. In the treatment of tinnitus and deafness, we must first distinguish between “deficiency and reality” because the principles of treatment for deficiency and reality are completely different. If we use kidney tonics indiscriminately in clinical practice without asking questions and without specialist examination by ENT doctors, the treatment will be ineffective or aggravated. The differentiation of deficiency and reality is only the first step in the treatment of tinnitus and deafness in TCM, that is, to establish the general direction of treatment (tonic or diarrheal method). TCM treatment is differentiated and individualized, i.e. “different treatment for the same disease” and “different treatment for the same disease”. The patient should first undergo a hearing examination to see if the tinnitus patient has hearing impairment (mild binaural symmetric hearing impairment cannot be detected by the patient). After identifying the symptoms, we can use various methods such as “Ming Tian Gu”, tympanic membrane therapy device, food therapy, acupuncture point injection and other Chinese and Western medicine methods to treat the deafness.
