Alcohol dependence is mostly caused by long-term excessive drinking, where the drinker is unable to control his or her behavior and experiences somatization and withdrawal symptoms. Alcohol dependence can lead to serious physical, psychological and social damage in many ways afterwards. The fundamental importance of treatment is to stop drinking. Because of the patient’s lack of initiative and persistence in quitting alcohol, as well as the possibility of withdrawal symptoms after stopping drinking, inpatient treatment is preferable. Alcohol-dependent patients usually have chronic malnutrition, so nutrition should be enhanced with protein and vitamin classes. After successful withdrawal, avoid drinking again, as even small amounts of alcohol can quickly return to the past state of alcohol dependence within a few days. Psychological treatment helps to strengthen confidence in quitting drinking and prevent recurrence.
