Tinea pedis is commonly known as “foot fungus” or “athlete’s foot”. It is caused by fungal invasion of the epidermis of the foot and is mainly contracted through direct or indirect contact. It manifests itself as small blisters, peeling skin, and erythema on the toes, soles, or edges of the feet, or as keratinization and roughness on the soles and edges of the feet. Tinea pedis is very itchy, and some patients can get foot infections that can lead to tinea due to picking their toes with unclean hands. Tinea pedis can also be transmitted to other people through contact. Therefore, tinea pedis should be treated aggressively. If tinea pedis is stubborn and recurrent, or if it is combined with a fungal infection of the toenail (commonly known as “gray toenail”), then oral medication should be used. It is important to note that when using topical medication, the course of treatment should be sufficient and should last at least three weeks. In the acute phase of tinea pedis, it is important to avoid the use of irritating topical medications, such as salicylic acid lotion, when vesicles are oozing; when there are comorbidities, the comorbidities should be treated before the tinea pedis. To prevent tinea pedis, you need to do the following: 1. Develop good hygiene habits, keep your feet clean and dry, and wash your shoes and socks regularly. 2. People with sweaty feet should also treat hyperhidrosis. Do not wear nylon socks and keep your shoes dry. What’s more, you should not wear shoes with poor breathability. 3.Sanitary utensils should be used separately from family members. Do not use public slippers, bath towels, or footbaths provided in public places such as hotels and inns, and do not touch the ground in public places such as gyms, pools, bathhouses, and sauna clubs with bare feet. 4. Patients who already have tinea pedis should promptly treat the disease they already have to avoid further infection. Socks should be washed in boiling water, and shoes should be kept in several pairs and rotated every day, so that they can be dried frequently. If you can do the above, tinea pedis can be prevented.
