What to look for after an artificial hip replacement

Mr. Zhao called to ask: Half a month ago, my father fell and fractured his femoral neck in his hometown, and the local hospital gave him an artificial hip joint replacement. What should I pay attention to during his post-operative recuperation? Doctor’s answer: It is recommended to help the old man recover the function of his limbs as soon as possible. Specifically, it is recommended to maintain a certain amount of activity and to progress gradually. 2 weeks after hip replacement surgery, it is allowed to lie on the healthy side, but a pillow should be placed between the lower limbs to keep the affected limb out of the booth and prevent dislocation of the affected limb due to excessive inversion. During the first 3 months after joint replacement, it is best for the elderly to use a cane to assist in walking and a high-backed hard chair of appropriate height. Hip flexion should not exceed 90° after hip replacement. Sitting on a low soft sofa, cross-legged, or stretched legs are prohibited. There are no special rules for sitting time, but it is appropriate not to cause joint discomfort or pain. When rising, you should first move your body forward to the edge of the seat, i.e., increase the number of knee flexion, use the armrests of the seat to lift your body with both hands, and then stand up. When going up and down stairs, it is best to do so after a period of post-operative recovery. If you have to go up or down stairs, it is recommended that you always have crutches or handrails to help protect you. When going up the stairs, the healthy limb should go first, while the crutches and the affected limb should stay on the original steps, i.e. “healthy first and affected second”. When going down the stairs, the affected limb and crutches should go down first, followed by the healthy limb, i.e. “healthy first”. In addition, care should be taken to prevent secondary falls and furniture should be arranged in a way that is convenient for the elderly. In short, after joint replacement surgery, the elderly need to pay attention to all aspects to maximize the life of the artificial joint.
