Proper understanding of colds

  It is often said that colds are common. How common are colds? Data shows that the average number of times a person gets the common cold is 2 to 6 times a year. The number of colds per year is higher for children, averaging 6 to 8.  Colds are called upper respiratory tract infections in the Western medical system. In fact, cold is also a Chinese medical term. The term “cold” was first used in the Northern Song Dynasty in the book “Renzai Zhizhi Fang – Zhu Feng”, which originally meant “feeling”. In the Yuan Dynasty, “Danxi Xinfa – Headache” began to use “cold” as the name of the disease.    Nowadays, cold in the scope of Chinese medicine mainly refers to the external disease of feeling wind or epidemic poison, resulting in the loss of harmony of lung health, with nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, headache, cold, fever, general malaise and other as the main clinical manifestations. In terms of the season of onset, winter and spring colds are the most common, with wind-cold colds being the main cause. In summer, wind-heat colds and summer humidity colds are the most common. In addition, there is also a period of epidemic cold in winter and spring, which is called the seasonal cold in Chinese medicine.  Why do we get colds?  Colds are mainly caused by viruses. There are many viruses that cause colds and so far, hundreds of cold viruses have been identified. In addition to these viruses that cause the common cold, influenza viruses also cause influenza. Influenza viruses are more “virulent” and have a greater ability to spread than common viruses.  According to Chinese medicine, “wind and rain, cold and heat, not deficiency, evil can not hurt alone.” Therefore, although the cold is caused by the external wind evil epidemic poison, but the vegetative body is not enough, it is easier to make the external evil invade the body and cause the cold.  Second, summer to be alert to the cold Summer days are long and nights are short, the hot and muggy weather will affect people’s normal sleep and rest, resulting in lack of sleep, making people feel weak and affecting the body’s resistance.  The hot and muggy weather in summer affects the appetite, and the light diet also affects the protein intake to a certain extent. People who are afraid of heat and cold often turn the air conditioner to a lower temperature, artificially causing a large temperature difference between indoor and outdoor, which can easily cause colds.
