How does carotid endarterectomy work?

Currently, carotid endarterectomy is the preferred approach to prevent ischemic stroke in an adapted population. This procedure has been clinically proven safe and effective for more than 50 years worldwide. Since 1990, large multicenter clinical trials have been conducted worldwide and have confirmed that carotid endarterectomy is effective in preventing stroke in patients with carotid stenosis. This procedure is performed approximately 130,000 times per year in North America, with more than 5,000 procedures performed annually in New York alone. In China, because of the late implementation of this procedure and insufficient publicity, many patients do not understand its importance and worry that the procedure is very risky. In fact, the technical difficulty of this surgery is not very great, the complication rate is very low, and the whole procedure takes only about 2 hours. From the follow-up of our patients after the operation, all of them did not have secondary strokes, no permanent complications remained, and only a few patients had short-term hoarseness and returned to normal within 3 days. As you can see, this is a procedure with minimal risk and great benefit.
