There are many ways of typing biliary atresia, usually divided into six types: (1) complete atresia of the hepatic duct, gallbladder, bile duct and common bile duct; (2) atresia of the gallbladder with a gap and all other extrahepatic bile ducts; (3) atresia of the liver duct with a gap in the gallbladder, cystic duct and common bile duct. (The above three types account for 80-90% of the total.) (4) complete upper segment of the hepatic duct and atresia of the lower segment and extrahepatic bile duct; (5) complete hepatic duct, gallbladder and cystic duct with atresia of the common bile duct; (6) complete upper segment of the hepatic duct, bile duct, cystic duct and common bile duct with atresia of the lower segment of the common bile duct only. (These three types account for 10-20% of the total number of cases.)
