Is it important to have high total bilirubin?

Whether a high total bilirubin is important or not is determined by the value. If the value of bilirubin is between 17.1 and 34.2 μmol/L, it is a kind of jaundice that cannot be seen by the naked eye and is hidden jaundice, so it does not matter; if the value of bilirubin is greater than 34.2 μmol/L, it is more serious. Total bilirubin is the sum of direct bilirubin and indirect bilirubin. When liver cells are damaged, they cannot process all the indirect bilirubin into direct bilirubin, which will result in high indirect and direct bilirubin in the blood, which in turn will result in high total bilirubin. If there are no other symptoms of occult jaundice, regular rechecking is sufficient. Patients can drink more warm water and take liver and bile cleansing medications as prescribed by the doctor. If the value of total bilirubin is greater than 34.2 μmol/L, the condition is more serious and may lead to aggravation of the disease if left untreated. Acute jaundice, cirrhosis and hemolytic jaundice may lead to a total bilirubin greater than 34.2 μmol/L. In addition to conventional treatment, it is also important for patients with high total bilirubin to maintain good dietary habits. Their diet should be light, try not to eat too greasy food, do not eat spicy and moldy food, and can eat more seafood, mushrooms, sesame, walnuts, dates, lean meat and other foods that protect the liver.
