Many patients are concerned about the pigmentation after healing, so here is a brief answer. In general, the shallower the burn, the faster it heals and the faster the pigmentation recovers, and it takes about six months for a general shallow second degree burn to fully recover. The healing wounds or wounds will go through the process of pigmentation (darkening) and then return to normal, which is related to the compensatory proliferation of melanocytes. The length of this process is not conclusive and varies within three years, especially within one year. Individuals vary greatly. The main treatment at this stage is to avoid direct sunlight and to assist with topical medications such as vitamin C and vitamin E and allantoin cream. Some severe trauma can result in too few melanocytes remaining, which can cause pigment loss (turning white). Pigment loss is more difficult to recover than hyperpigmentation, and pigment loss that is not recovered after one year is usually difficult to restore by self-repair. Excimer laser treatment is generally recommended for this condition. It can have a more satisfactory effect.
