What’s wrong with red, swollen, painful eyes that can’t be opened?

Red, swollen and painful eyes that cannot be opened. If the upper eyelids are red and swollen with tenderness or painful blinking, it is usually a wheal, a bacterial infection of the lid gland. Anti-inflammatory treatment is needed, usually with levofloxacin drops or Topaz eye ointment, which can be used 4-6 times/day for the drops and 2-3 times/day for the ointment. If the inflammation is under control, it usually subsides in about two weeks. If the inflammation is not controlled, then it may cause further proliferation of bacteria, leading to orbital cellulitis, usually with more severe redness and swelling, when it is more difficult to open the eye. Oral antibiotics, such as cephalosporin, or intravenous antibiotics for systemic anti-inflammatory treatment are needed to effectively control the inflammation and reduce the symptoms of redness and pain.
