Dietary contraindications for hyperthyroidism

Patients with hyperthyroidism should be careful to avoid foods high in iodine, such as seaweed, nori and deep-sea fish. This is because iodine is the raw material for the synthesis of thyroid hormones and the intake of the above foods may trigger or aggravate hyperthyroidism. It is also important to control the intake of high-fibre foods such as oats and leeks. This is because patients with hyperthyroidism suffer from gastrointestinal disorders and the consumption of these foods may aggravate diarrhoea and other uncomfortable symptoms. In addition, patients with hyperthyroidism should take care to avoid a diet that is stimulating, such as alcohol, chillies, onions, ginger and garlic, and foods that may cause goitre, such as cabbage and kale.
It is important to note that dietary care is only one part of disease control and is not a complete substitute for treatment, and active medical consultation is recommended for any discomfort in daily life.
