In order to enhance clinicians’ correct understanding of the common cold and improve the level of clinical diagnosis and treatment of the common cold in China, the Emergency Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the Respiratory Physicians Branch have jointly taken the lead in organizing relevant experts to compile the Expert Consensus on the Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment of the Common Cold to standardize the diagnosis and treatment of the common cold and guide the correct and rational use of drugs, thereby improving the level of diagnosis and treatment of the common cold and reducing medical costs. 1, the common cold treatment principles The common cold is caused by viruses, and the use of antibacterial drugs is not recommended for treatment. At present, cold treatment is based on symptomatic treatment and relief of cold symptoms, while paying attention to rest, proper hydration and avoiding secondary bacterial infections; oral drug therapy should be preferred for cold patients, and blind intravenous rehydration should be avoided. Symptomatic treatment of cold mainly includes decongestants, antihistamines, cough suppressants, expectorants, etc. The clinical practice usually uses a combination of the above drugs. 2.Rational selection of drugs according to the symptoms The typical symptoms of common cold can be divided into khat symptoms and systemic symptoms. In the early stage of common cold, the main symptoms are dryness in the nasopharynx, sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion and other cicatricial symptoms; after the initial symptoms, systemic symptoms such as sore throat, cough, headache and joint pain will appear. The use of over-the-counter medications for the treatment of colds should be targeted as much as possible according to the corresponding symptoms. For patients who have only nasal cata symptoms in the early stage, the classic combination of pseudoephedrine plus paracetamol is recommended to effectively relieve nasal congestion, sneezing and watery eyes. When cough, body aches, fever and other symptoms appear on the basis of nasal khat symptoms, it is recommended to take cold medicine containing cough and antipyretic ingredients. 3, avoid repeated medication Currently on the market for the treatment of colds of a wide variety of drugs, different names, but their composition is the same or similar, drug effects are more or less the same, so compound cold drugs should be used only one of them. If you take more than two kinds of compound cold medicine at the same time, it can lead to repeated medication, overdose and increase the incidence of adverse drug reactions. In conclusion, the high incidence of common cold can bring a huge social and economic burden, which deserves the attention of clinicians. However, due to the current misconceptions and inadequacies of clinicians’ perceptions and behaviors towards colds lead to serious problems of antibiotic abuse and repeated medication in common cold treatment. The Expert Consensus on the Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment of the Common Cold will provide guidance to clinicians on the scientific and rational use of medication in the treatment of the common cold in practice. Cold treatment should choose different solutions according to different symptoms, focus on symptomatic treatment without antibiotics, and avoid the simultaneous use of multiple compound preparations.
