Time to mumps blood amylase elevation

Elevated serum amylase is mainly seen in patients with acute pancreatitis and usually starts to rise in 2-12 hours, peaks in 12-72 hours, and gradually returns to normal after 3-5 days. Amylase is mainly secreted by the pancreas and salivary glands, and the parotid gland is the largest of the salivary glands. When the parotid gland becomes inflamed, the parotid gland is damaged and amylase can enter the bloodstream, resulting in elevated blood amylase. It is important to note that the severity of pancreatitis is not proportional to the degree of amylase elevation, and even in the presence of necrotizing pancreatitis, amylase may decrease. Therefore, when pancreatitis is suspected, it is important to clarify the type of mumps in combination with symptoms such as parotid enlargement and pressure pain as well as parotid ultrasound findings. In addition, since mumps is an infectious disease that can be transmitted through the respiratory tract, patients should be well isolated on a daily basis, while eating a light diet and avoiding spicy and irritating foods to avoid inducing aggravation of the disease.
