On October 19, in a ward of the Department of Otolaryngology at Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat Sen University, two deaf patients, one old and one young, underwent cochlear implant surgery on the same day. This surgery set a record for the oldest and youngest cochlear implant surgeries in the province. Under the supervision of Director Zheng Yiqing, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, the 81-year-old patient with postlingual deafness and the 6-month-old patient with congenital deafness underwent cochlear implantation at the Department of Otolaryngology of Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. A million worlds, babbling streams, brisk birdsong, we can hear all kinds of jumping notes, but for hearing-impaired patients, their world is silent, always still, without any murmur or laughter. Fortunately, as cochlear implant technology is now slowly developing in China, hearing-impaired patients are beginning to see the light of happiness. Ten days after completing the surgery, the two cochlear implant patients returned to the hospital for their turn-on. From the moment they were switched on, they finally stepped into the wonderful world of sound, with smiles of satisfaction on their faces; the 81-year-old postlingually deaf elderly man heard the long-awaited greetings of his family, while the little congenitally deaf child, who was only 6 months old, was amazed at all the sounds he heard. Cochlear implant technology has given new hope to a large group of hearing impaired patients who will permanently stay in a world without sound. Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat Sen University is often the first choice for patients with hearing loss. The Department of Otolaryngology at Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University is at the leading level in China, both in terms of medical team and instruments and facilities.
