How schistosomes infect humans

Schistosomiasis is mostly contracted by direct skin contact with epidemic water containing schistosome cestodes. In humans, the cestodes enter the blood circulation system through the skin and develop into adult worms in the body, which are parasitized in the portal vein system of the liver and enter the liver or other organs with the blood flow after laying eggs. The clinical manifestation of schistosome infection can be dermatitis at the invasion site, accompanied by fever, generalized dermatitis, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and pressure pain in the liver area.
