A boon for children with funnel chest

Recently, a thoracoscopic correction of NUSS funnel chest was successfully performed in our hospital. The surgery took a minimally invasive thoracoscopic approach and successfully corrected a funnel chest deformity in a 16-year-old male child. According to Prof. Yunping Zhao, the main surgeon, funnel chest is a common congenital chest wall deformity in which the patient’s sternum and ribs are sunken into the spine to form a funnel shape. The child is often thin and immobile, prone to upper respiratory tract infections and limited mobility. They may experience panic, shortness of breath and dyspnea during activity. In addition to the thoracic deformity, there are often special body shapes such as mild hunchback and protruding abdomen. It even causes displacement of the heart and pulmonary function is affected. Sometimes there is a combination of pulmonary hypoplasia, Marfan syndrome, asthma and other diseases. In addition to the above physical diseases, the affected children often suffer from psychological stress and have difficulty fitting in with their peers. Traditional funnel chest surgery includes sternal reversal, sternal transection and elevation, rib cartilage removal, etc. The disadvantage is that it is very traumatic and requires a median sternotomy and cutting off the ribs and pectoralis major muscle to correct the problem. It not only affects the aesthetics, but also has poor results. In contrast, the thoracoscopic NUSS funnel chest orthopedic surgery performed by the Department of Thoracic Surgery of our hospital takes a minimally invasive approach, with only small incisions of about 2-3 cm on both sides of the chest wall and the placement of orthopedic plates, without cutting the pectoralis major muscle and ribs, and the operation time is only about 1 hour. The patient can be discharged from the hospital in 3-5 days without a chest tube after surgery and the plate can be removed after 2-4 years. Compared with the traditional surgery, thoracoscopic NUSS is the first choice for funnel chest because of its small incision and trauma, short operation time, less bleeding, fast postoperative recovery and good orthopedic effect. Prof. Yunping Zhao reminded that the age of corrective surgery for funnel chest is 3-18 years old, and the best age for correction is 3-12 years old, and children with suspected symptoms should come to the hospital as early as possible. As of press time, the child who underwent this surgery has successfully recovered and was discharged from the hospital.
