Minimally invasive surgery for congenital funnel chest is effective

Funnel chest is a common disease in pediatric surgery, with an incidence of 1/1000. funnel chest is a congenital thoracic deformity in which the lower part of the sternum is depressed inward and the adjacent rib cartilage is also depressed with it, forming a funnel-like appearance. In the past, the treatment of funnel chest was to cut the skin in the anterior chest of the child longitudinally, with an incision of about 10 cm, to separate the pectoral muscles on both sides, remove part of the ribs on both sides, and then fix them with steel pins. The operation is very traumatic, bleeding (300-400 ml), long (about 2.5-3 hours) and slow to recover after surgery. In addition, because the steel needle is easy to move, it is often displaced and bent, and there is a possibility of breakage, and permanent scars are left after surgery. At present, this type of surgery is rarely used in China. The most advanced “minimally invasive funnel chest orthopedic surgery” is performed under the thoracoscope to lift the sternum, which only requires a 1 cm incision on the lateral chest wall of the child to place the thoracoscope, and a 2 cm incision on both sides of the lateral chest wall to fix the plate behind the sternum. The surgery takes only 30-40 minutes, with fast recovery, stable fixation of the plate, no incision in the anterior chest, and beautiful appearance. The age of surgery is 4-20 years old, and the best age for surgery is 6-12 years old. The cause of funnel chest The cause of funnel chest is not clear, although rickets can be caused, but most of them are congenital developmental abnormalities, some scholars believe that it is caused by overgrowth of rib cartilage, the overgrown rib cartilage bends backward, causing the chest wall to be depressed to form funnel chest. The inwardly sunken sternum squeezes the vital organs of the chest cavity, resulting in restricted growth of the thoracic organs (heart and lungs) and shortness of breath, which is usually mild at birth and often becomes obvious as the body grows and becomes adolescent. The danger of funnel chest to human body Mild funnel chest has little effect on circulation and breathing, but serious funnel chest sunken sternum and ribs will compress the heart, lungs and other organs in the chest cavity, making the child susceptible to respiratory infections, poor exercise tolerance, thin body shape, like static and bad movement. In addition to the physiological effects of funnel chest on the child, it also causes greater mental burden and psychological pressure on the child and parents. These children are often ashamed to expose their foreheads in public, afraid to wear tank tops in summer, afraid to bathe in public bathrooms, afraid to go swimming, and even form psychological isolation.
