Pacemaker therapy is currently the most effective and complete treatment for a condition like slow heartbeat. Every year, tens of thousands of patients in China undergo pacemaker implantation. Pacemaker implantation can eliminate or reduce the symptoms caused by a slow heartbeat and improve the quality of life of the patient, thus restoring a healthy life. As a patient, you should be aware of the precautions to be taken after pacemaker implantation, contact your physician regularly and follow up with him/her regularly to ensure that the pacemaker works safely and effectively. 1.Post-implantation activity precautions The patient should lie flat on the bed within 24 hours after implantation, and avoid activities of the shoulder joint on the operated side; after 1-3 days, the activity can be increased, and appropriate attention should be paid to the amount of activity or the way of activity. Gradually moving the shoulder joint in an appropriate amount can prevent shoulder stiffness and other discomfort. In the early stage, we should strictly avoid rapid and sudden movements or forceful lifting of the arm on the side where the pacemaker is embedded. Generally, the electrode leads can be fixed after 1-2 months, but it is still necessary to pay attention to the amplitude, strength and weight-bearing force of the arm, and to avoid movements close to the buried position such as push-ups. Do not press directly on the pacemaker surface and do not try to squeeze or move your pacemaker. The discomfort of feeling the pacemaker like a foreign body is common and usually adapts gradually. Do not scratch or rub the skin of the pacemaker, and contact your physician immediately if you notice any local inflammation such as fever, pain or fluid. 3. Daily life after discharge After pacemaker implantation, you can resume your life as a normal person and return to work, but you should be careful to avoid places that generate a lot of electricity or magnetic fields. Do not go near industrial induction furnaces, magnets, large motors, arc welding equipment, radar antennas, restricted areas of radio and television transmission stations, high-voltage equipment and power transmission sites, restricted areas of power stations, etc. 4. Matters to be noted during medical treatment Be careful not to place magnetic objects close to the part of the pacemaker that is buried. Some medical devices or treatments may affect the pacemaker, such as MRI diagnostic machines, defibrillators, shock wave lithotripters, diathermy, radiotherapy, electrosurgical knives, radiofrequency ablation, etc. Remember to tell your doctor that you have a pacemaker when you go to the doctor, and it is best to carry your pacemaker implant card with you. 5. What should I be aware of when traveling? Patients with pacemakers can travel by any means of transportation, including cars, airplanes, boats, high-speed trains, magnetic levitation trains, etc. However, when traveling by airplane, your pacemaker will be detected by the metal detectors in the regular security check and you will need to show your pacemaker implantation certificate or pacemaker implantation card, which is also valid abroad. When traveling, try to carry your pacemaker implantation card with you so that you can provide accurate information to your health care provider as soon as possible in case of temporary need and provide appropriate treatment in a timely manner. 6. What should I pay attention to when using a cell phone? Most of the pacemakers currently in use in China have an anti-mobile phone interference function, so pacemaker patients can generally use cell phones without worry. However, care should be taken when placing or answering cell phones: do not put the cell phone in the jacket pocket on the same side of the implant, keep the phone more than 15 cm away from the pacemaker when answering a mobile phone, and try to answer it with the other ear of the pacemaker. 7. What should I pay attention to when using household appliances? However, for pacemaker-dependent patients, some appliances that are in direct electrical contact with the body or emit electromagnetic waves should be avoided, such as induction cookers and low-frequency therapy devices. 8. Other points to note When passing through the security doors of supermarkets, stores, libraries, etc., which are equipped with electronic security devices and electronic security check systems, most of them will not affect the pacemaker at normal speed. If you feel uncomfortable, leave the above area quickly and the pacemaker will return to normal. 9. Regular follow-up Patients’ conditions may change over time, and regular follow-up should be performed as required by the physician after pacemaker implantation. In case of abnormalities or accidental collisions, a timely visit is required. The main purpose of the follow-up visit is to evaluate the working condition of the pacemaker, adjust the pacing parameters to optimize the pacing scheme, assess the condition of the pacemaker battery, and ensure the safe and effective working of the pacemaker; through program control, the occurrence of arrhythmias and other events can be understood and further treatment can be guided. The follow-up period after discharge from the hospital is usually once every six months within 1 or 3 months after the pacemaker is newly implanted, and then every six months to a year depending on the situation; the pacemaker must be replaced in time with enhanced follow-up at a later stage of use, i.e., near the end of the warranty period or later, to avoid emergency replacement or accidents due to pacemaker battery depletion. Patients should also understand that pacing therapy is an effective method for slowing down arrhythmias, but it does not cure the primary disease causing the arrhythmia. Therefore, after pacemaker implantation, some patients should follow medical advice for standardized medication and comprehensive treatment of the primary disease and concomitant diseases. If a pacemaker is not managed after implantation, it is the same as a pregnant woman giving birth to a child and not raising it.
