In June 2015, the Reproductive Medicine Center of Nanjing Maternal and Child Health Hospital launched the Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) technology. The Nanjing Municipal Health Bureau and Jiangsu Provincial Health Planning Commission organized national experts to conduct a strict review of our hospital according to the declaration process, which has been successfully passed. Every year, nearly 20 million newborns are born in China, and unfortunately, 4%-6% of them are affected by various birth defects, which bring heavy economic and mental burdens to families and society and cause widespread concern in the society. Most of the birth defects are due to genetic defects, and since they cannot be cured, they can only be prevented in advance. PGD is a technique to actively block the vertical transmission of genetic diseases, also known as third generation IVF, by performing genetic diagnosis on embryos obtained by in vitro fertilization technology and preferentially selecting normal embryos for transfer into the uterus for normal conception. It is suitable for monogenic diseases, chromosomal diseases, genomic diseases, mitochondrial diseases and polygenic genetic diseases. Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS), developed on PGD technology in recent years, is particularly suitable for advanced age women and couples with recurrent miscarriages and repeated IVF implantation failures, and this technology has been gaining more and more attention. The Reproductive Medicine Center of Nanjing Maternal and Child Health Hospital, under the leadership of Professor Ling Xiufeng, has seen the number of infertility outpatient visits climb year by year. The personalized ultra-ovulation promotion and micro-stimulation ovulation promotion programs have provided the majority of patients with high pregnancy rates while greatly reducing the cost of treatment for patients, and enjoy a good reputation in Nanjing and surrounding cities. At the same time, our genetic diagnosis technology is leading in the province, and our advantageous fields and technology platforms are linked together to achieve the following: “genetic disease diagnosis – carrier screening – reproductive genetic counseling –PGS/PGD – Reproductive Medicine – Prenatal Diagnosis – Newborn Screening “PGS/PGD helps IVF increase pregnancy rates by providing important embryonic genetic information, providing an important intervention option for infertile couples, reducing harm and increasing success rates.
