What to do about synovitis of the greater trochanter

Surgery is required for complete cure of greater trochanteric bursitis, as local aspiration can be done first, but the aspiration will recur and cannot be cured. The entire bursa will be removed surgically and the area where the bursa was formed will be inactivated with alcohol to prevent recurrence. The bursa will disappear after surgery and the pain will be significantly reduced and the chances of recurrence will be significantly lower. Because of trochanteric bursitis, there may be swelling, pain or cystic swelling in the trochanteric area of the femur. If these symptoms occur, a local ultrasound can be used to check the size of the bursa and whether the bursa is solid or cystic, and then depending on the results, surgery can be chosen so that the chances of recurrence of greater trochanteric bursitis are significantly reduced.
