To investigate the effectiveness and safety of lumpectomy with holmium laser for the treatment of male urethral stricture and atresia. Methods From April 2007 to November 2009, 17 patients with male urethral strictures or atresia, with a mean length of 0.5-3.0 cm (1.4 cm), were treated by lumpectomy with holmium laser. A urinary catheter was left in place for 2-4 weeks after surgery. Urethral dilatation was performed periodically after removal of the catheter according to the follow-up urination status. The maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax) increased from an average of 6.5 (2.8-11.5) ml/s before surgery to 20.4 (16.6-25.3) ml/s after surgery, with no complications of urinary incontinence, impotence, or urinary fistula. At 3 to 18 months postoperative follow-up, all of them had good urination without restenosis, and the remaining urine was <20 ml by ultrasound. Conclusion Holmium laser endourethrotomy with regular urethral dilatation under lumpectomy is safe and effective in the treatment of male urethral stricture and atresia, and the recent treatment results are good, with little surgical trauma and few complications, and it is worth promoting the application.
