Bei Sha Shen, sweet, slightly bitter flavor, slightly cold in nature. It belongs to lung and stomach meridians. It has the effects of nourishing yin and clearing the lungs (removing lung-heat by nourishing the fluid in the lungs), benefiting the stomach and generating fluids (nourishing the stomach by replenishing the fluid in the stomach). It is used in treating lung-heat and dry cough, laborious cough with phlegm and blood, deficiency of gastric yin (insufficient yin fluid in the stomach), injury of fluid in febrile illnesses, and dryness of the throat and thirst. It should not be used together with veratrum. 3. Fructus Chuanbei, bitter, sweet, slightly cold in nature. It belongs to lung and heart meridians. It has the efficacy of clearing heat and moistening the lungs (removing heat to moisturize the lungs), resolving phlegm and relieving cough, dispersing nodules and eliminating carbuncle (evacuating nodules and eliminating carbuncle toxins). It is used for lung-heat and dry cough, dry cough with little phlegm, cough due to yin deficiency, cough with blood in phlegm, scrofula (mainly refers to tuberculosis of lymph nodes in the neck), mammary carbuncle, and carbuncle in the lung. It should not be used with Chuanwu, Prepared Chuanwu, Caowu, Prepared Caowu, and Appendicitis.
