Common neonatal problems [jaundice], mildly harmless, seriously disabling!

The baby was born pink and tender, cute as can be, a day or two later will find that the baby’s pink skin becomes more and more yellow, this is “neonatal jaundice” in the monster, most babies will have neonatal jaundice, the following we will unveil the “neonatal jaundice “the veil it. The cause of jaundice baby jaundice is due to an increase in the body called “bilirubin” substances, bilirubin by the body’s red blood cell metabolism, the liver to remove out of the body, when the rate of bilirubin production exceeds the rate of removal, bilirubin accumulated in the body produced jaundice. Newborn babies with a high number of red blood cells, short life span and immature liver function are prone to jaundice. Jaundice is one of the most common manifestations in newborns Most babies develop jaundice in the first week after birth, which is a yellowish discoloration of the skin and sclera visible to the naked eye. Usually, jaundice gradually appears 1-2 days after birth and gradually worsens, reaching a peak in 4-7 days, after which it gradually decreases. If the degree of jaundice is not high, the baby is in good spirits and eats milk well, this is called “physiological jaundice” and generally does not affect the baby much, so mothers and fathers do not need to be too nervous. Severe jaundice may leave sequelae If your baby has jaundice early, jaundice is particularly high, and lasts a long time, it is called “pathological jaundice”. In severe jaundice, bilirubin is deposited on the skin and enters the brain tissue, causing a certain degree of damage to the brain tissue, known as “bilirubin encephalopathy”. The brain damage caused by severe jaundice is permanent, leaving a degree of sequelae: involuntary limb movements, eye movement disorders, hearing impairment, intellectual backwardness, cerebral palsy, etc. Therefore, if severe jaundice is not treated in time, it can cause lifelong regrets for the child and the family. How do doctors observe and treat jaundice? The doctor will check the baby’s room every day after birth and may use a flashlight-sized device on the baby’s skin to initially assess the level of jaundice, or may use his or her “golden eye”, which has seen countless babies, to assess the level of jaundice, and may recommend that a baby with a high level of jaundice have his or her blood drawn to check the bilirubin concentration, and that jaundice above the normal range be treated promptly. Treatment. The most effective and preferred treatment for severe neonatal jaundice is phototherapy, in which the baby’s skin is exposed and a medical blue light is shone on the skin, which helps the bilirubin in the body to be converted and excreted more quickly, usually with good results. More severe jaundice may require the use of blood exchange therapy and some blood products. In some cases, the jaundice is caused by an infection, which may require anti-infection treatment. The popular saying “drink glucose water to reduce jaundice” is never mentioned in medical books or medical treatment guidelines. How should parents deal with jaundice in newborns? First, correct attitude towards jaundice. We understand that jaundice is a physiological phenomenon in most babies, so if the jaundice is not serious, there is no need to be too nervous, but we also know that severe jaundice is extremely dangerous and may leave sequelae, so if the baby’s jaundice worsens quickly or the jaundice level is high, you need to remain highly alert and seek help from a professional doctor in time to avoid lifelong regrets. Second, timely follow-up after discharge from the hospital. Neonatal jaundice usually worsens gradually after birth, reaching its peak in 4-7 days, but most babies are discharged home with their mothers 2-4 days after birth, so be sure to follow up within 2-3 days, individual babies with high jaundice levels during hospitalization, or in cases such as mother’s blood type O, the doctor may instruct a follow-up visit within 1-2 days, so mom and dad must follow the doctor’s instructions closely. Third, more sunshine and better feeding. Depending on the weather conditions, let your baby get more sunshine and make sure he or she is fed well. More sunshine and better feeding can help reduce jaundice, but insufficient feeding can aggravate jaundice in babies.
