Barking cough and shortness of breath are most commonly associated with acute laryngitis in children. The structure of the larynx in children differs from that of adults and the clinical presentation is different from that of adults. Inflammation of the larynx starts rapidly and progresses rapidly, with children presenting with a barking cough, shortness of breath, hoarseness and a stridor. If not treated promptly, manifestations such as wheezing, cyanosis, pallor and confusion may occur, and eventually respiratory and circulatory failure may develop, with serious consequences. It is recommended to send to the emergency room.
