The tongue is the most flexible articulatory organ in the mouth, with the tip, edge and root of the tongue moving up and down, stretching, curling and rounding, and it plays an important role in the production of complex speech sounds. The pattern of resonance peaks during vowel articulation determines the quality of the vowel sound. Children with short tongue ligaments often have limited tongue stretch and curl due to the traction of the ligaments, and often pronounce vowels in a fixed low frontal position, resulting in a significant additional peak in the speech chart when pronouncing the high front vowel /i/. In contrast, the /a//u/ vowels are pronounced in the low front and high back position, and they are not pronounced with an obvious tongue lift, so there is no significant difference between the two groups in the speech chart. In the consonants, except for the bilabial /b//p/m/ and labiodental /f/, which mainly rely on the airflow to burst through the lips, the front /z/c/s/, the middle /d/t/, the back /zh//ch/sh//r/ and the surface /j//q//x/ all require different degrees of tongue lift. In order to overcome the traction of the lingual ligature, children with short lingual ligatures are often incorrectly extending their tongues between the upper and lower teeth or compensating by raising the dorsum of their tongues, thus preventing the normal obstruction and friction between the airflow and the tongue surface, resulting in abnormal pronunciation patterns. The basis of Chinese phonetics is the pinyin alphabet, and the correct pronunciation of each letter must depend on the correct part and the correct way. The short lingual tether not only affects the correct site of pronunciation but also causes mispronunciation in children. The formation of a child’s phonological system is a gradual process of neuromuscular pattern formation, and once the abnormal neuromuscular pattern is firmly established, it is often difficult to correct it in a short period of time. This will directly affect the reception of children’s knowledge and create psychological barriers such as low self-esteem and reluctance to speak.
