Currently about 80% of our bladder tumors found can be surgically eradicated through electrodesiccation, which is now the internationally accepted standard of care for urologists. This procedure is less invasive and quicker to recover, usually requiring only one or two days of hospitalization and costing about 6,000-7,000 RMB.
In the clinic, we found that there are still many patients who are worried about how to stay in the hospital for one day if they have a tumor, and they heard that bladder tumors are easy to recur after surgery, so what is the follow-up effect after the surgery and how long will it take to recur?
In fact, for patients whose tumors are not deep into the bladder, electrodesiccation is the lowest postoperative recurrence rate under the condition of bladder preservation, and the probability of recurrence has a great relationship with the malignancy of the tumor itself and the depth of bladder infiltration.
After electrosurgery, according to the standard treatment requirements, physicians should classify patients into three groups of low, medium and high risk of recurrence based on six indicators such as the number of tumors found intraoperatively, tumor size, pathological grading and clinical stage. The recurrence rate of low-risk patients is 15% at 1 year and 30% at 5 years; the recurrence rate of medium-risk patients is 38% at 1 year and 62% at 5 years; the recurrence rate of high-risk patients is 61% at 1 year and 78% at 5 years.
It seems that the recurrence rate after bladder tumor electrosurgery is still very high, but don’t worry, this figure is the average, in some professional treatment centers, through superb surgery and active follow-up treatment, the recurrence rate is much lower than this average, and if the doctor requires regular review, most of the patients with recurrence can still be treated by minimally invasive surgery.
