Geriatric Cataract Science

What are the characteristics of the occurrence of cataracts in modern people? With the increasing aging of the population, cataract has become one of the major problems affecting the visual quality of life of the elderly, and about 70% of the elderly will suffer from cataract at the age of 85 or above. However, in recent years, the age of cataract patients has shown a younger trend, and the number of cataract patients aged 50-65 in outpatient clinics has increased significantly, which is closely related to the change of modern life style. The development of electronic communication technology makes modern life easier and more convenient. The excessive use of computers, cell phones, ipods, ipads and other types of video screen terminals leads to excessive eye use, visual fatigue and myopia. For middle-aged people, sudden deepening of myopia should alert the occurrence of cataracts. At the same time, excessive microwave radiation also makes cataracts appear earlier in middle-aged people. 2, bad daily life style: With the rich material conditions, people’s living conditions have been greatly improved, however, bad dietary habits also lead to obesity, hypertension and diabetes and other chronic diseases are getting younger and younger, and the abnormal metabolism of the whole body also makes cataract occur earlier. Some people also have smoking and alcohol habits that lead to vitamin deficiency and a decrease in the antioxidant capacity of the lens, which aggravates cataracts. 3. Insufficient outdoor UV protection: Many young cataract patients have more outdoor activities, however, the protection is insufficient. It is well established that the ultraviolet component of sunlight is more damaging to the lens, and the incidence of cataract is much higher in highland areas than in other regions. The more people travel outdoors in modern times and lack the awareness to wear sunglasses for protection, the longer they are exposed to bright light, the greater the chance of developing cataracts. What should I do if I may have cataracts? First of all, people who may have cataracts should go to regular medical institutions for preliminary eye examinations such as vision and optometry to exclude blurred vision caused by refractive error, and if necessary, further examinations to exclude glaucoma or fundus lesions. It is not advisable to use eye drops without a clear cause, which will not solve the problem and lead to dry eyes and allergies. How to treat cataracts? There are no medications that can effectively inhibit the formation of cataract or stop its further development. The only treatment is surgery to remove the cloudy lens and implant an artificial lens.
