Acupuncture for post-stroke sequelae

It is one of the three most dangerous diseases in the world today, with the characteristics of high morbidity, high mortality, high disability, high recurrence rate and many complications. In recent years, due to the improvement of medical treatment, the mortality rate of stroke has been reduced, but the disability rate is still high, and about 80% of survivors have different degrees of functional impairment, i.e. stroke sequelae, which brings a heavy burden to patients’ families and society. Therefore, reducing the disability rate and increasing the speed of recovery are the most important tasks in the treatment of this disease. Post-stroke sequelae include cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral infarction and subarachnoid hemorrhage, which are mainly manifested as limb paralysis, aphasia, mouth and eye distortion, difficulty in swallowing, slow thinking, difficulty in association, memory loss, irritability and depression. According to Chinese medicine, stroke hemiplegia is mostly caused by Qi deficiency, blood stasis, phlegm blockage and hyperactivity of liver and Yang, resulting in the disorder of internal organs and loss of nourishment of meridians. Cerebrovascular accidents often result in significant motor dysfunction, and acute stroke patients who do not receive early and appropriate treatment and rehabilitation often suffer permanent disability. Acupuncture is the treatment of choice for the sequelae of stroke. Acupuncture has been passed down through thousands of years of clinical practice for the treatment of stroke hemiplegia, and the WHO has now declared post-stroke sequelae as one of the most important indications for acupuncture. Modern medical research proves that acupuncture and massage on the head can help establish cerebrovascular collateral circulation rapidly, promote the increase of blood flow in damaged cerebral tissues, and improve the recovery and compensatory effect of brain function; body acupuncture with rehabilitation therapy can accelerate the improvement of affected limb function and accelerate the recovery process. Acupuncture and rehabilitation therapy have the functions of relaxing tendons and channels, activating blood circulation, improving joint mobility and muscle tone, which are important for the recovery of this disease. The earlier the patient receives acupuncture treatment, the better. Therefore, acupuncture and rehabilitation training can be performed when the patient is conscious and the condition is basically stable. 1. Acupuncture treatment in the acute stage of stroke: generally from the onset of stroke to 15 days. In this period, the condition changes a lot, so it is necessary to strengthen the observation, combined with the use of drugs and so on. As long as the vital signs are stable, blood pressure and blood sugar are relatively stable, acupuncture can be used. A large number of clinical and experimental evidence shows that the earlier the acupuncture intervention, the better the patient’s prognosis, without overemphasizing the need for complete stability of the disease. 2, the recovery period of stroke acupuncture treatment: recovery period generally refers to 15 days – 6 months after the onset of stroke. In this period, the patient’s condition begins to recover, but there are obvious functional disorders, such as motor sensory disorders, language disorders, emotional disorders, etc.. Whereas drugs are not effective for these impairments, acupuncture is very effective. This period should actively encourage patients to seek treatment from experienced doctors in hospitals. The process of patients visiting hospitals is a process of active rehabilitation exercises. 3, treatment of the post-stroke period: the post-stroke period generally refers to 6 months after the onset of stroke. During this period, the recovery of motor and sensory functions is slowed down significantly. If acupuncture treatment is adhered to during this period, it can still improve the prognosis and promote the further recovery of limb function and speech dysfunction. Acupuncture can adjust the body’s function and stimulate the body’s recovery potential, so acupuncture treatment for stroke is not only effective and has no side effects, but also can reduce the recurrence rate of stroke, which is the best treatment for stroke patients. Through years of clinical experience, the Acupuncture and Massage Department has found that the combination of “scalp acupuncture and body acupuncture”, “acupuncture and herbal medicine” and “acupuncture and massage, rehabilitation training” is a comprehensive approach to treat stroke. The treatment of patients with “three stages” of stroke is more ideal.
