If a patient has a mole that suddenly becomes more raised, it is recommended that the patient visit a regular hospital dermatology department to rule out any malignant changes. This is because some moles will appear obvious, like protruding and becoming larger and irregularly shaped, when they undergo malignant changes. However, sometimes, a patient’s mole may appear to be raised for other reasons, such as the occurrence of obvious infection around the mole or the recent repeated stimulation of the mole by friction, which may also cause the mole to be raised significantly. There are also times when a patient’s mole suddenly protrudes, perhaps due to changes in hormone levels, which had been slowly protruding before and was discovered by the patient by chance, but the patient should still rule out any malignant changes.
