Can you get pregnant with hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism, known as hypothyroidism, affects all systems of the body and can cause significant damage to the reproductive system, but it is possible to conceive if it is effectively controlled. Effects on conception: Hypothyroidism can cause loss of libido and sexual function in men and menstrual disorders and hormone disorders in women, which significantly reduces the chance of conception and is one of the causes of clinical infertility. Effects on pregnant women: hypothyroidism can cause endocrine disorders, loss of appetite, constipation and hypothyroid heart disease, which will greatly increase the risk of pregnancy. Effects on the fetus: Hypothyroidism can cause abnormal development of the fetal nervous system, congenital hypothyroidism and cretinism, as well as increase neonatal mortality due to mucinous edema. Although hypothyroidism may cause infertility and pose many risks to pregnancy, it is still possible to get pregnant if the thyroid hormones can reach normal levels after regular treatment. The most common treatment for hypothyroidism is hormone replacement therapy, the goal of which is to restore thyroid hormone levels to normal. The dosage of treatment depends on the patient’s condition, age, weight, and individual differences. Hormonal parameters are checked every 4-6 months at the beginning of treatment, and then every 6-12 months after the treatment has reached the standard. If the indicators are normal, pregnancy will not be affected and the development of the fetus will not be affected. In addition, for some secondary hypothyroidism, it is possible to recover if the original disease can be removed. For example, if hypothyroidism is caused by medication or physical or chemical factors, it is possible to cure it completely by stopping the medication that affects the thyroid gland, staying away from the curative factors, and supplementing with medication. Patients with primary disease can be cured before elective pregnancy. Therefore, it is possible for patients with hypothyroidism to become pregnant. Although hypothyroidism may cause infertility, it is not absolutely impossible to get pregnant. Female patients with hypothyroidism that is effectively controlled can also get pregnant safely, and patients with secondary hypothyroidism can also get pregnant safely after treatment.
