Preventing Steele’s Disease Must Prevent Colds

Adults with Still’s disease mainly present with fever, rash, and joint pain. It is recurrent and requires long-term treatment with hormones and immunosuppressants. Recently, we observed that the occurrence of adult Still’s disease is related to infection. Recently we tested three patients and found that all of them had viral infections. Two patients with fever were added with antiviral therapy when moderate doses of hormones could not control their body temperature, and underwent antiviral therapy, and their body temperatures quickly decreased to normal. In one case, a patient taking high-dose hormones for a long period of time had a positive viral test and abnormal liver function, although his body temperature was normalized. After antiviral therapy, the hormones were quickly reduced to 6 tablets and the liver function improved. In one of the cases, the hormone was reduced to two tablets per day, and one day he suddenly developed a fever, as if the disease was going to relapse. After telephone consultation, it was suggested to add antiviral drugs again, and the hormone was increased to 6 tablets. The next day, the body temperature returned to normal, and the hormone was soon reduced to the minimum dose. However, the number of cases is still too low to draw any conclusions at this point. It is also not known whether it is possible to stop the hormones completely. But in our experience preventing colds is certainly helpful in preventing Steele’s disease.
