What is the treatment for corrosive esophageal burns?

Corrosive oesophageal burns include emergency management, dilatation therapy and surgery. First, immediate neutralisation of the corrosive material, such as swallowing saline, vegetable oil or protein water, followed by life support, such as incision of the oesophagus to give respiratory and circulatory support. Finally, corticosteroids and antibiotics are used to prevent infection. After stabilisation, the oesophagus is dilated to prevent stricture; in cases of severe long strictures and failure of dilatory therapy, the oesophagus is surgically severed and replaced by an anastomosis with the stomach, jejunum or colon.
