The intrauterine device (IUD) is the contraceptive measure of choice for the vast majority of women of childbearing age in China. The contraceptive effect can reach more than 90%. Although most women are able to adapt to the intrauterine device, its side effects should not be ignored. The contraceptive mechanism of the IUD is to produce a local inflammatory reaction, which kills the embryo and interferes with the fertilization of the egg to achieve the purpose of contraception. Inflammation, secretion will increase, the patient often manifested as vaginal secretion than before the operation increased significantly, combined with the infection will also lead to vaginitis, endometritis and so on. Infections must be treated aggressively. When a foreign body is placed in the uterus, the uterus will naturally have a rejection reaction, and the patient will have abdominal distension or lower back distension and pain, which will usually get better after the adaptation period, but the IUD needs to be removed when the pain is severe. The IUD stimulates the uterine lining and may cause irregular vaginal bleeding, increased menstrual flow and prolonged menstrual periods. Generally the body’s adaptation period to the ring is 3-6 months, if the persistent menstrual bleeding increases, the IUD needs to be removed. If the IUD is placed for too long, the IUD may become incarcerated, fractured, dislocated, and pregnancy with the IUD may occur. In conclusion, the side effects of IUD placement should be handled in a timely manner, with regular checkups and timely removal of the ring if it is displaced.
