The treatment of extensor tendon injuries depends on the severity and type of tendon injury.
If the injury is open, surgical repair of the tendon is required and the finger needs to be braked in the extended position to relax the extensor tendon.
If the injury is closed, conservative treatment with a cast or brace for 4 to 6 weeks is possible. If the avulsion fracture is severe, emergency surgical treatment or inpatient surgery is required.
If the closed injury is accompanied by a larger avulsion fracture, surgical treatment is performed to fix the fracture, supplemented by postoperative immobilisation in a cast or brace.
