Pediatric myotonic squint is caused by a condition (such as abnormal intrauterine pressure or fetal malposition) in which the sternocleidomastoid muscle in the neck is damaged and fails to recover in time, causing degeneration and sclerosis of the muscle tissue in the area, which results in muscle contracture and shortening, and consequently pulls the neck and tilts the head to one side. If not corrected early, it may lead to scoliosis, thoracic asymmetry, facial asymmetry, strabismus, etc. Early detection and treatment of this disease is important, and early rehabilitation physiotherapy treatment is usually the best treatment within two months. Our department mainly uses massage, electrotherapy, laser irradiation and other comprehensive treatment, to achieve the effect of relaxing the tendons and blood, softening and reducing swelling, and restoring muscle elasticity. Most of the children can be cured clinically through standardized treatment. For the few patients who cannot be completely cured, early rehabilitation physiotherapy and functional exercise of the muscle groups can greatly improve the symptoms, reduce the size of the mass, improve the efficacy of future surgery, shorten the postoperative recovery time, and reduce the risk of recurrent adhesions and facial asymmetry after surgery. If the child is diagnosed with myelomeningocele, firstly, please try to let the child sleep with the head upright or with the jaw turned to the affected side. Secondly, do not apply local heat because most parents do not know the temperature and time well, and the intense local heat on the sternocleidomastoid muscle will accelerate its contracture. Third, if the mass is not large, soft, smooth and mobile, the child’s head is not restricted, the disease has a certain tendency to heal itself. Fourth, if parents choose to massage at home, the action must be gentle, not too long, not too many times, do not force too hard.
