What Low Platelets Mean in the Elderly

Low platelet count in the elderly generally means that they may suffer from certain diseases, such as those that cause increased peripheral platelet destruction, decreased platelet production and excessive platelet consumption. 1. Increased peripheral platelet destruction: such as hypersplenism, immune thrombocytopenic purpura and rheumatic immune diseases will destroy platelets, thus resulting in low platelet count. 2. Reduced platelet production: hematopoietic stem cell lesions such as aplastic anemia, bone marrow injury such as bone marrow metastatic cancer, leukemia, multiple myeloma, malignant lymphoma, myelofibrosis, etc., which can directly destroy the hematopoietic micro-environment and hematopoietic stem cells, resulting in reduced platelet production. 3. Excessive consumption of platelets: If the patient suffers from DIC, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and other diseases, the platelets will be consumed when they form microthrombus, thus causing low platelets. When the elderly check out the condition of low platelet, they should further do a comprehensive examination under the guidance of the doctor to clarify the cause of the disease and treat the cause.
