What is carcinoma in situ?

Carcinoma in situ is defined as cancer of the entire cellular layer within the epithelial layer of the mucosa or within the epidermal layer of the skin, but without breaking through the basement membrane of the skin or submucosa to invade the surrounding tissues. When cancer occurs in the lobular alveoli of the breast but has not yet invaded the basement membrane, it is also called lobular carcinoma in situ.
