Viral hepatitis D is usually contracted on top of, or in conjunction with, hepatitis B virus infection. In most cases, infection with hepatitis D virus exacerbates hepatitis B, leading to increased manifestations of liver damage, and also makes it more likely to turn into chronic hepatitis.
The prognosis for mild chronic hepatitis is good, but the prognosis for severe chronic hepatitis is poor, with the majority of patients with severe hepatitis developing cirrhosis and, in a small number of cases, even hepatocellular carcinoma.
However, do not worry excessively, once the symptoms associated with viral hepatitis D are detected, timely consultation at a regular hospital and active cooperation with the doctor in treatment can prevent the condition from worsening.
