Why does the post-operative review of nasal polyps last as long as six months?

Usually after surgery, doctors will advise patients to review regularly. For patients with nasal polyp surgery, it is also true that they should generally insist on a review for about six months after surgery. Many patients will have doubts, nasal polyps such a small surgery, why also need to review as long as six months? In general, within three weeks after surgery, the trauma in the patient’s nasal cavity will go through the process of blood oozing, coagulation and crusting, and the mucous membrane is also in a state of edema, so it is necessary to go to the hospital and let the professional doctor help clean up the blood crust. The first review: about 1 week after discharge At the end of the surgery, the doctor will fill the nasal cavity with some hemostatic materials. Although many times nowadays the filling materials used are liquefied and absorbed, during the absorption process, there will still be blood oozing, crusting and secretions generated from the wound. These substances need to be thoroughly cleaned up by the doctor with an aspirator under the nasal endoscope to facilitate the next step of treatment. Second review: around the 3rd week after discharge After the first cleaning, if the patient’s sinus opening is well opened and there is little postoperative excessive edematous mucosal tissue, then a second review can usually be scheduled in the 3rd week after discharge. This review will also include a nasal clearance, but it is much easier than the first. This is a critical period when the surgeon will observe the regeneration, epithelialization and repair of the mucosa. If the mucosa is not progressing very well in the repair process, through the review, the doctor can detect and take appropriate measures in time; if the recovery is good in the second review, and there is even some early epithelialization, then the doctor will usually recommend extending the review to 1 month later, almost in the 7th-8th week after discharge from the hospital. The postoperative period from 12 weeks to 6 months is the consolidation phase, which can be reviewed once every 1-2 months In general, pathological changes will gradually disappear during this phase, and the wound will gradually reach the ideal healing state. However, if the postoperative wound does not complete epithelialization and fails to heal ideally, and pathological changes such as adhesions, scarring at the wound, and sinus stenosis appear, it is a sign of possible recurrence. Therefore, even in the consolidation phase, patients should still insist on review. During the review, the doctor will make a follow-up plan according to the actual recovery of the patient, which is usually once every 1-2 months, with a continuous follow-up of more than 6 months (half a year). Warm tip: The arrangement of review period and length is based on the patient’s postoperative sinus cavity recovery. If the patient’s postoperative recovery is not satisfactory, there is a possibility of more frequent reexaminations. Patients should review on schedule according to the doctor’s recommendations and should not adjust the review schedule at will, let alone give up on the review. In addition, when the doctor cleans the patient’s nasal cavity, especially during the first review, the nasal cavity is still edematous and there are more secretions, which may cause some discomfort, but most of them are within the tolerable range. Patients should not be overly afraid and should not give up the review because of these discomforts and lose a lot because of the smallness.
